how do i create a formula that will tell you how many people are in the U.S. if a 1/4 of the people equals 57.7 million

People is the unknown, so give it a name like p. So you can write the problem like this:

\[\frac{p}{4} = 57.7\]

Now you just need to multiply both sides by 4 to solve for p. (When you get the answer, remember that it will be in millions.)
