the floor of a rectangular room is completely covered with square tiles. The room is 9 tiles long and 5 tiles wide. Find te number of tiles th touch the walls of the room.

With 9 x 5 tiles, you have a total of 45 tiles.
Now consider of leaving out one row of tiles all around the outside of the rectangle. The tiles that are inside are 7 x 3, or 21 tiles. These don't touch the walls.
So 45 - 21 = 24, do touch the walls
