What is the solution set of |x – 2| + 4 = 3? please please help

OpenStudy (amistre64):

what number, plus 4, equals 3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-1?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

correct; now .... the absolute value would have to be equal to -1; BUT, can an absolute value every produce a negative number?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

OpenStudy (amistre64):

then there are no solutions

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the empty set denotes "no solutions"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you

OpenStudy (amistre64):

good luck ;)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the equation |x-2|+4=3 has no solution because |x-2|>0 and a +ve integer summed with 4 could never be equal to 3..so the equation has no solution
