what is the difference between libel and slander?

Libel is written while slander can be anything else such as a spoken insult or a rumor defaming someone. For example, libel laws in the United Kingdom are extremely strict (with expensive consequences) so many journalists and papers are compelled to take extra care that whatever they print can be backed by the facts or does not lead to unfounded implications defaming other people.
