Generally, a tree adds one layer per cycle (year).

but is this problem a geometrical equation?
Would you  have to determine the radius of the circle in order to find outthe age of the tree

No.  The spaces between the lines will tell you how abundant or scarce resources were that year.  Only the count is significant for age.
