The sunlight of the sun is reflected by the moon, since we usually see the moon sideways, we only see the portion that is iluminated by the sun. The changes of the phases are then created when the moon rotates around the earth, being it full moon when the moon is opposite to the sun, because we are seing the moon from the side it is being iluminated and so on.
