What is down payment with regard to buying a house?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm going out on a limb here, but it may be the "principle", or initial investment. As is : I=PRt. Hopefully someone else can chime in here.

here are my 3 options A. a part of the purchase price paid in installments B. a part of the purchase price paid in cash C. an interest on the purchase price

I would go with B. of all of those. I'm so sorry I'm not as certain as I should be. The down payment isn't one of the regular mortgage payments, it is far, far more, so I would assume not A. The down payment also reduces the price of the purchase as a whole so I would think it would not involve the interest (C.). Again, going out on a limb here though.
