if f is a continuous function defined for all real numbers x and if the maximum value of f(x) is 5 and the minimum value of f(x) is -7, then which of the following must be true? 1) the maximum value of f (/x/) is 5 2) the max value of /f(x)/ is 7 3) the min value of f(/x/) is 0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can someone please help me?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2) the max value of /f(x)/ is 7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how did you find it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

max absolute value of|f(x)|=|-7|=7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh yes, i see that now. thanks. do you have any other clues for the other ones?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

others have no definite answer..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

f(|x|) means f(x) for x>0. But you know nothing about where f(x) reaches 5 or -7. So you can't say if it's right or wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you so very much.
