1. The introduction to the lesson says that Faulkner's "great theme was the American South." "A Rose for Emily" is a good example of regionalism. Identify two examples of local color from the story.

Well its basically a story of Old South v New. Emily Grierson was not willing to join in with those who moved into the new era. She refused to pay her taxes. And kept on a negro servant. Also, Miss Emily never updated her outlandish old fashioned southern home. Consider too how in the beginning it talks about how her home was the last of a neighborhood of homes that used to be the nicest part of town.

Another example is the fact that the narrator did not believe that Emily could truly love Homer Barron because he was a yankee. Just as well no one questioned what Emily was doing with the rat poisioning. Because of her "Old South" social standing no one would really confront her. They constantly walked on egg shells around her simply because she held the status of "lady."

That would be the same way now. If Lindsey Lohan snorts coke she goes to jail. Unlike in Emily's day when she could commit murder simply because no one wanted to challenge her.
