Which of the following functions shown in the table below could not be an exponential function?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A. f(x) B. g(x) C. h(x) D. k(x)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

***Choose ALL that apply!! :)

OpenStudy (phi):

if you can add a constant value to a term to get the next term, that series is not exponential

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay that would be a geometric sequence right??

OpenStudy (phi):

geometric is exponential. arithmetic is not

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay so how do i figure out which ones are answers to my question and which ones aren't??

OpenStudy (phi):

I would first pick out the arithmetic sequences, because they are clearly not exponential The exponential series will have terms that you multiply by a constant to get to the next term.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk.. which are arithmetic?? f(x) is not geometric irght? so its arithmetic?? g(x) is multiplied by 2 each time.. so not this one either right? h(x) is + .25 each time so no right? and k(x) is divided by 4 each time.. so idk so is f(x) the only answer here??

OpenStudy (phi):

exponential will show a big variation between the first, middle and last number in the series (as a rule of thumb) g(x) is clearly geometric ( x 2) so it is exponential h(x) is arithmetic. so it is your answer k(x) is multiplied by 0.25 so it is exponential (exponential "decay" ) f(x) looks to be exponential.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay so f(x), g(x) and h(x) are all my answers??

OpenStudy (phi):

h(x) could not be an exponential. It is your answer g and k are exponential so they are not part of your answer f could be exponential, but I do not know its equation....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so only h(x) is my answer then??

OpenStudy (phi):

yes, I believe it is h(x) only

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay!! great! thx :)
