I'll add parenthesis to show the order of operations.

a + 3 - (1 * 3) + 2 - 4 + (0*1) = 0
a + 3 - 3 + 2 - 4 + 0 = 0

So let's get the variable by itself.

a + 3 - 3 + 2 - 4 = 0
a + 3 - 3 + 2 = 4
a + 3 - 3 = 2
a + 3 = 5
a = 2

So there we go. I overcomplicated it on purpose, but a = 2.
