Which equation should be used to solve this problem? The sum of two consecutive even integers is 42. Find the numbers. Let x = the first number.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if a number is consecutive, how does it relate to the original x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its x+(x+1) cuz they are one apart

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but they are two even numbers

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats not one of the answer. i think it might be x + ( x + 2 ) = 42

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes you got it, even integers are separated by 2 (same if the question required odd integers)
