The table shows the heights of four people Karyl plays basketball with. A data set shows various players' heights in inches: sixty-four, sixty-five, sixty-seven, sixty-eight What will happen to the mean height when a player who is 73 inches tall joins the group? The mean increases by 1.4 inches. The mean increases by 18.25 inches. The mean does not change. The mean decreases by 13.2 inches.

@twilaswift There isn't an easy shortcut to this one. First, you should probably find the mean height of the four people listed in the data set. You need to add 64, 65, 67, and 68, then divide the sum by 4 (since there are four players). That is the mean of the 4 players. Then take that same sum, and add in the 5th player's height of 73. Now, to get the new mean, you need to divide the new sum by 5 (since there are now five players). Finally, compare the original mean to the new mean and see how much it went up or down.

I can hang out here and let you work out each step and help check your work. I haven't solved it yet either.

66 52.8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got 66 for the original mean. Where did 52.8 come from?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

when I divided the sum by 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, ok. Actually, you missed a step. When you found the first mean, the numbers added to 264, right? That was the sum of the heights of the 4 players. Now, for the new mean, you need to add the new height of 73 into that sum of 264 to get the new sum with all 5 players.... THEN divide by 5.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

264 + 73 = 337 337 / 5 = ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

67.4 so it went up by 1.4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Right :) good work.

You are my new best friend to do math homework. :D

Glad to help :)
