Write the following polynomial in descending powers of the variable and with no missing powers. 4x^3-5x+16

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Highest power is 3. Descending means from large to small. The only missing power is 2.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[4x ^{3}-5x+16\]

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

4x^3 + 0x^2 - 5x + 16

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

What you're given is already in descending order, but it doesn't show the missing power which is 2. By including 0x^2 you are including the 2nd power.
