How do Equivalent Expressions work?

Pretty big question! Basically, two expressions are equivalent if you can change one to look like the other, without changing the value of either of them. For example, take 3x and 2x+x. In the second expression, you can combine like terms to get 3x, so the two expressions are equivalent.
