There are 2^52 passwords that are in a server. 2^20 common passwords are used by 1/2 the users. Assuming you go down the list of the 2^52 passwords, what is the avg. guesses it will take, to enter a password correctly? You cannot use the dictionary

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you have any idea how to solve?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Honestly I am not good at story problems I always get them wrong I am supper sorry!

sok :)

good luck though!

It sounds like you need to find the expected value, but I could be wrong on how to go about solving it. I want to say to use an indicator variable and the probability of guessing a password correctly to find this, but I'm not positive. Stats isn't exactly a fond area of math for me.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you explain what that means? if it helps i can give you the answer options. it is multiple choice

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2^51, 2^52, 2^20, 2^42, 2^21

OpenStudy (xkehaulanix):

Yikes, I'm worse at stats than I thought. The answer I thought it might be isn't even in those. I'll keep thinking about it, but I probably won't come up with the answer anytime soon, sorry!
