How does the discovery of seafloor spreading help to explain the mechanism behind why plates move?

The spreading centers add crust and in subduction zones crust is pushed under crust (usually oceanic crust under continental crust as oceanic crust is much heavier). So the idea is that if you take something away you must then be adding it somewhere.
