A large group of teenagers is divided into two smaller groups of 125 each, and each group watches a different movie. One group watches a love story while the other group watches a movie containing several scenes with violence. The teenagers are then asked questions to uncover unconscious associations and determine their level of aggression. I. What is the population? II. What is the sample? III. Is the study observational or experimental? Justify your answer. IV. What are the variables? V. For each of those variables, what level of measurement (nominal, ordinal, interval, or ratio) was used to obtain data from these variables?

OpenStudy (sirm3d):

the population is the the group of respondents, in this case, 250 teenagers. the sample is 125 in either movie category.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay

OpenStudy (sirm3d):

when you ask, that is observational. when you measure, that is experimental.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What would be considered the sample?

OpenStudy (sirm3d):

125 teenagers in each movie category.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay was confused there for a minute

OpenStudy (sirm3d):

a study is observational when you gather "answers" from respondents. this answers are generally subjective. in an experimental study, the responses are actually measured, like the number of mg of a drug administered to a lab. animal.

OpenStudy (sirm3d):

the variables being measured in the study are unconscious association and level of aggression.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So would you say the variables would be ratio or interval due to the questions asked?

OpenStudy (sirm3d):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes to which there was 4 choices?

OpenStudy (sirm3d):

my take is on interval.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay I knew it had to have been one of the last 2 choices simply because of the numbers and the people asked I was going to take interval because it was asking the teens the questions

OpenStudy (sirm3d):

i take back my answer. it would be ratio, since there is an absolute zero level of aggression.

OpenStudy (sirm3d):

furtermore, a level 6 of aggression is considered to be 3 times as much as a level 2 aggression.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay didn't know that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have 3 more questions to do

OpenStudy (sirm3d):

the difference between between interval and ratio is in the concept of absolute zero. 0 degree temperature does not mean no temperature, so temperature is interval.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh okay now I understand it a little better
