Please Help! Assume the heights of high school basketball players are normally distributed. For boys the mean is 74 inches with a standard deviation of 4.5 inches, while girl players have a mean height of 70 in and standard deviation 3 in. At a mixed 2-on-2 tournament teams are formed by randomly pairing boys with girls as teammates. On average, how much taller do you expect the boy to be?

OpenStudy (youngster):

do you use the mean for the difference?

OpenStudy (youngster):

i don't think so though

OpenStudy (callisto):

That's how I would do it.. :| But I'm not good at stat...

OpenStudy (kropot72):

Any linear combination, aX + bY of Normal random variables X and Y (where a and b are constants) will be Normally distributed. Expectation algebra is used to find the mean of linear combinations of independent Normal random variables as follows: E[aX + bY] = aE[X] + bE[Y] If a = 1 and b = -1 the formula becomes: E[X - Y] = E[X] - E[Y] \[E[difference]=E[H _{1}]-E[H _{2}]=74-70\]
