A stranger. Yes, that is the word. I was a stranger. That is how I felt when I first stepped on the soil of Palestine; the country that would soon become an imperative component of my identity. I was born and raised most of my life in America in Dover, Delaware. For many years, America was my home; My school, my family and friends. Everything a young girl needed to consider a place called home was there. Where there was always arms open wide embracing me from people who love and care about me. I think being in a diverse community would be a great experience for me to learn about different backgrounds, cultures and traditions. I would very much enjoy being a part of the Rutgers Community and would enjoy the variety of backgrounds just as I have enjoyed them within my own community. Also being in Palestine and living there for almost a year was a big experience for me knowing that I have lived in America all my life and being more used to the culture in America. In addition, by studying business and being a part of the business world, I can inspire those who want to go on the business pathway as well. My own background is diverse on its own being of Palestinian descent and I am familiar with the traditions and values of my culture that I recently learned more about since I started living in Palestine. Being a Palestinian American and having to live here for the first time in Palestine for my junior and senior year was hard at first. Getting used to the culture and the traditions that I thought I knew all about but then I realized I didn't know everything I expected I knew about my country. When I first came to Palestine, I was in cultural shock because of their way of life being extremely different then the lifestyle I was used to in America. Since I was here in Palestine I learned a thing or two about being of a girl my age having to live by myself while my family are overseas in America millions of miles away. I began learning how to depend on my self-being, how to adapt to the high schools curriculum and also the environment and even learning to speak the language of Arabic was the most difficult for me. Nothing was the same, I was a stranger to my country; surrounded by people I do not know until a couple of months past and I started picking up the language and started making friends who I think of are like family to me now. The social diversity I have been exposed to has pushed me to become a well-rounded person. So because of my own multicultural background I can very much contribute into Rutgers diverse community. Also what would make me a good candidate at Rutgers University that academically I am a very determined and studious person who knows what they want and just goes for it. Since I was about fifteen years of age, I always loved taking history classes and business technology classes. Then I knew that the world of business was for me. I highly value diversity and believe it is important in the business world I plan to be a part of someday especially in my field of marketing and management. Therefore, because of my own diverse background I am very open to meeting people of different backgrounds and learning different cultures and interests, something I believe I can experience while at Rutgers University.
