Identify the vertex and the axis of symmetry of the parabola. Identify points corresponding to P and Q.

please help....?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you know what a vertex and axis of symmetry is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

zepdrix (zepdrix):

So we have a fancy bowl here. The vertex is the location we pour the cereal into, whether it's Captain Crunch, Cocoa Crispies... whatever it maybe, aim for the vertex when you pour. Do you understand how to read the graph? It looks like the cereal bowl has been shifted 2 units to the right, doesn't it? :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, it does.

zepdrix (zepdrix):

So the vertex is located at (2,0). yay.

zepdrix (zepdrix):

Axis of symmetry, hmm. See how the bowl is the same exact shape on both sides of our vertex? If we drew a VERTICAL line upwards, it would cut the bowl in half equally. An equation for a vertical line is of the form x=a. So our axis of symmetry is at x=2.

zepdrix (zepdrix):

Having any trouble finding P and Q? It should be pretty straight forward, just count from the origin how many places you've moved.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

p is going to equal 3,1 right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats what i got....

zepdrix (zepdrix):

From the CENTER OF THE GRAPH, it looks like we moved 1 unit right, 1 unit up to get to P. I would call that point (1,1)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ooooooooooooooooooh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you so much
