Identify the graph: 1. x^2 -y^2 =16 2. 5x^2 -y = 9 are these both parabolas because they begin with x^2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok. what is it that differentiates them? the 5 being in front of the parabola?

I just found some information that said this, "You can identify the equation for a circle when x and y are both squared, and the coefficients on them are the same"

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

For the first one, with a minus sign between the x^2 term and y^2 term, it's not a circle.
