Why must the themometer be removed from atest tube containing water when it is being heated?

OpenStudy (aaronq):

i don't see a reason why you'd have to remove it. although, whenever you're taking the temp of any solution or liquid, the thermometer should not be touching the glass of the container

thank you

why should the thermometer not touch the glass of the container

OpenStudy (aaronq):

because you won't be taking the actual temperature of the solution, since the thermometer is in direct contact with the material where the heat is being applied. think about when you're boiling water on a stove, the pot heats up then transfers the heat into the water, but the pot will be a lot hotter than the actual water (at first)
