if there are 20 fewer cows than twice the number of pigs then twice the number of pigs must be 20 more than 50. which is 70. if twice the number of pigs is 70 then there are 35 pigs :)

ok so replace the word cow with the letter c and the word pig with the letter p

so your previous statement was there are 20 fewer cows than twice the number of pigs

as an equation this is...

c + 20 =2 x p

so if c = 50 then

50 + 20 = 2 x p

70 = 2 p

p = 35

pleasure - to create an equation really all we are doing is taking short hand note form of what is said. try it yourself with a similar one now...

if there are 3 times more eggs than there are slices of bacon in half of a packet (of bacon). If there are 6 slice of bacon in each packet how many egg are there?


the biggest thing to remember is that when you move things from one side of an equation to another you have to reverse the math signs (ie - goes to + and x goes /)
