one out of 10 lightbulbs in a pack are broken. If there are 100 lightbulbs in a box, how many would you expect to be broken?

OpenStudy (hba):

Out of 10 Lb - 1 is broken out of 5*10=50 Lb-5 are broken

hartnn (hartnn):

a more mathematical way is to first find probability of a bulb being broken. remember : probability = no. of favorable events/ total number of events. once you find probability, expected value is just probability * total number of events required.
