In MLA, is it possible to cite without giving page numbers? I'm referring to a book I've used and summarising large parts of it, and my summary also incorporates other works by that author on the same subject. Citing each and every page number would be impractical, but citing pp 1-420 just seems ridiculous. What should I do?

I don't think you have to, I haven't in past times.

If the source has page numbers, they have to be used.
