I have no idea what this says/means but it was an answer to that question on yahoo answers so here it is! Synthetic division is a shortcut that is just as sufficient as long division, if it follows these guidelines: 1. The denominator (what you're dividing by) must be either a monomial (a one term polynomial expression, like x, for example) or a binomial (a two term polynomial expression, like x+5 or x-2). 2. The lead exponent should be 1 (like, you shouldn't have an term like x^2-5 or x^3+6). otherwise we cannot use synthetic division,and we have to do long division.
