OpenStudy (selena2345):

What are the major causes of mechanical weathering ?

OpenStudy (espex):

What does "mechanical weathering" mean? How would you define it?

OpenStudy (espex):

Right, so what do you know of that breaks down rocks but does NOT change their chemical composition?

OpenStudy (selena2345):

Mechanical Weathering

OpenStudy (espex):

:) No, mechanical weathering is the "process", just as pounding is the process of striking something, but you could say that a hammer is used for pounding.

OpenStudy (espex):

So what about the beach? What do you suppose causes the sand, where do you think that sand comes from?

OpenStudy (selena2345):

Sediments

OpenStudy (espex):

You could have also said sea shells, as there is a little bit of each of those in the sand. However, the main component of sand is crushed rock.

OpenStudy (espex):

What crushes those rocks to make the beach?

OpenStudy (selena2345):

sedimentary rocks

OpenStudy (espex):

No. A sedimentary rock is just that, a rock. While it is comprised of compressed sediment, it does not produce sand.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Rain.
