Write a short story based on a sport or other physical activity you are familiar with. The story should include the following: Be 4–5 paragraphs long .. • • Include at least 3 characters. • Have an internal conflict as part of the main conflict of the story. • Include dialogue.
What if you made the internal conflict that the main character's father is from another country that doesn't particularly value sports? His culture values the pursuit of the intellectual mind and thinking. The main character, however, wanting to assimilate into American culture becomes a football player [or whatever popular American sport] and cannot even begin to determine whether he is doing this for the enjoyment of it - - or as a way to separate himself from his father whose accent is beginning to bother him. That is, the main character's friends have been starting to make references to the father's distinct differences, the ones that were never particularly noticeable before until they were pointed out. Does he honor his father and the respect for parents that is central to the culture of his father's family - - or does he go to great lengths to separate himself and create an identify of his own? And how can he create that separate identity without doing permanent damage to the relationship?
1. 3 Characters: main character, father, mother (the mother is dealing with the growing tension between her two men; she witnesses it and feels alarmed and helpless) 2. Internal Conflict: desire to belong to father and his family and desire to fit into American culture (he wants both, but one or the other wins out depending on who he is around, family or friends)
