I need help with UNIX!! i have to create my own shell that will allow me to change file status and copy from one directory to another Can anyone pls help me !!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Somebody can certainly help you. But how about you first tell us what you want? What does "create" mean? You need to write it? In what language? What's the problem? etc, etc ...

The problem just says create you own shell that will allow you to change file status and copy from one directory to another. But i guess this is related to the first and the second lab that i did before this. in the first lab I made four directories called east, west, north and south. all the four directories had 4 subdirectories in them called sales, manufacturing, inventory and accounting. Each subdirectories have 4 files in them. Thats what i did for first assignment. for the second he asked to change all the file in North structure to read only, in the south structure to hidden and in both East and west to copy inhibit. That what i have as if now.

Well that sounds more like an introduction to _use_ a unix-like system. I mean - if you are required to copy stuff from one directory to another, you could just read the lecture-notes or book-chapters or whatever... But I have no clue what you mean by creating your own shell... other than maayyybe being on some GUI and clicking the 'Terminal' icon. As long as you can't state your problem, I guess nobody's going to be able to help you...

i am taking operating systems and i have some unix assignments to create. this stuff is new to me. I dnt have any idea what he is asking for .. I tried asking him for help but he is of no use !! book doesnt say anything abt UNIX. and he doesnt give any assignments nor does he write anythning. just reads of this notes. So i have absolutely no idea how i can do this !!

So you mean the question doesnt make sense ?

OpenStudy (rsmith6559):

I'm trying to understand your assignment, but I keep reading it as much more advanced than what you have been doing. It's interesting, some of the terminology you use I'm not familiar with, and I've been a (primarily) *nix sys admin for 15 years! What have you been discussing in class? I'm just trying to get an idea of what this assignment could be, besides a 100,000 line C program.
