1) Rafael Nadal is a professional tennis player from Spain. 2) He is 26 years old. 3) He was number one in the world. 4) He is considered one of the best tennis players ever. 5) He plays best on clay. 6) He is the best tennis player ever on clay. 7) Rafael Nadal is one of Spain's best athletes. 8) He is very giving and kind. 9) In Spain, he is very popular. 10) He has told the world that Spain is his favorite place.
Which Spanish level are you in?
Spanish 2 :) just simple spanish? :D
well, i just started spanish 2 :)
i get really confused when i am conjugating and stuff. :/
Okay. Yeah, just simple Spanish. I think that by Spanish 2, you'd know how to translate sentence #2.
yeah i do :) is it this?? 2) El tiene veintiseis anos. is that right? :) i think i spelled 26 right?? idk did i ?
Yeah, that's right. Good job.
thanks!! :)
So, was your assignment to write 10 sentences about Rafael Nadal?
no, it's about somebody i choose... and i chose rafael nadal :)
Okay great. So, I'll translate the first sentence, and I'll show you how to break it down. Rafael Nadal is a profession tennis player from Spain. Rafael Nadal es un jugador profesional de tenis, de España. You see here, "jugador" is "player." "profesional" is "professional." "tenis" is "tennis." "España" is "Spain."
okay :) i see :) thanks!! :D and we got #2 already :) so #3.. hmm lemme try this :/
Okay.
Have you learned the imperfect tense, in Spanish? You'd need it for #3.
yes, but only shortly... :/ I'm not too good at it :/
is this it for #3? 3) Fue numero uno en el mundo. ??
idk is that right? :/
Well, for one, "fue" is preterite, not imperfect. Since we're trying to say that he USED TO BE the best player in the world, we'd wanna use the imperfect tense of "ser." Here's the problem: Here in America, we say #1 when we mean to say "the best." But I'm not a native Spanish speaker, so I don't know if Spanish speakers also say "#1" to mean "the best." I do think it'd be better to actually say "the best player in the world."
Here's ser in the imperfect: (Yo) Era (Tu) Eras (El/Ella/Usted) Era (Nosotros) Eramos (Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes) Eran
oh okay :) that'll work!! :D so what do i write for 3 then?? :/ idk :(
Okay. Do you know how to say.... "He was the best player in the world?"
umm is it this? 3) El era el mejor jugador en el mundo. ?? idk, but i just realized, i mean to say he was ranked #1 in the world... ya know??
cuz he was ranked #1 in the world before :)
Yeah, you could say that. The only thing that I would personally say different is... instead of "en el mundo," I'd say "del mundo." It literally means "of the world."
okay so this is it then for 3? 3) Fue numero uno del mundo. ??
Era.
era?
You can say "Era el numero uno del mundo." I just researched #1, and it seems that Spanish speakers DO say #1, to mean "the best," and such. Yes, era. Remember the imperfect?
We use the imperfect whenever we talk about something that was consistent, and on-going.
ohhh okay haha :P so 3) Era el numero uno del mundo. ??
Yeah.
awesome!! :D so 4 now!! is this 4? 4) Es considerado uno de los mejores jugadores de tenis. ??? idk tho :/
Instead of "es considera," you can say "Él se considera."
okay so 4) El se considera uno de los mejores jugadores de tenis. ??
Yeah.
I'm looking at #5. Have you learned about the verb "preferir"?
kk :) and 5 now?? is this it?? 5) El juego mejor en arcilla. ?? idk :/
preferir? ;/
Yeah. It means "to prefer." Like "yo prefiero jugar en una pista de tenis de arcilla."
Yo prefiero. Tu prefieres. El prefiere. Sound familiar at all?
ohhh yeah i think i have... sounds familiar... i don't think we did it in depth tho :/
Okay. Well it's actually pretty simple. It means "to prefer." If you've learned it in class, then sentence #5 is actually a good opportunity to use it.
If he plays best on a clay tennis court, then we can say that "he prefers to play on a clay tennis court," you know?
ohhh okay, so i would say he prefers to play on clay. ??
oh wait haha urs is better... so we'll use that one then?
Yeah, more specifically, that "he prefers to play on a clay tennis court."
Él prefiere jugar sobre una pista de tenis de arcilla. Have you learned about the word "sobre"?
kk :) would it be like this then? 5) El prefiere jugar en una cancha de tenis de arcilla. idk tho... this one is confusing :/ and yes i vaguely remember it... could u pls refresh me? :D
Sobre just means "on," like "on top of" and it can also mean "about."
You can say "cancha de tenis." That's another way of saying it. And it's fine. But instead of "en," remember to say "sobre."
ohhh okay so 5) El prefiere jugar sobre cancha de tenis de arcilla. is that right?
Yes, that's right. UNA cancha And can you see how that sentence is broken down? El -- he prefiere -- prefers jugar -- to play sobre -- on una cancha de tenis -- a tennis court de arcilla -- of clay.
oh okay aweomse!! so i need to add UNA, like this? 5) 5) El prefiere jugar sobre una cancha de tenis de arcilla. ??? and yes i understand :D
Good job.
For #4 don't put el se considera. Write el es considerado..
Why wouldn't we write se considera?
Se considera si but not el se considera because if you write el se considera you are saying he considers himself..
yay!! :) and so for 4 i write el se?? or el es?? and is it consideradO? or consideradA? consideradO? right?? cuz he's a guy? :/
El es considerado uno de los mejores jugadores de tennis de todos los tiempos
I put de todos los tiempos cuz that basically means "ever" the way it's used in the sentence
considerado is a past participle, so it always ends with an O.
so instead of this: 4) El se considera uno de los mejores jugadores de tenis. i write this? 4) El es considerado uno de los mejores jugadores de tennis de todos los tiempos. ????
It DOES mean "he considers himself," but I thought that we could also use "se considera" to mean "is considered." "Es considerado" isn't wrong though, I admit.
Thats right
kk so i use this one for 4? 4) El es considerado uno de los mejores jugadores de tennis de todos los tiempos. ?? and its correct?? :D
Yes. Considerado.
kk :) so we are on 6 now right?
Okay. So you know how to say "he is the best tennis player ever."
Could 6 be this?/ 6) El es el mejor jugador de tenis nunca de arcilla. ???
I don't think that's how we'd say it. lol. Do you remember what malutella said?
About how to say... "he is considered one of the best tennis players of all time"?
El es considerado ?? so 6) El es considerado mejor jugador de tenis nunca de arcilla. ??idk :/ is that even close?? haha
Malutella said... "Él es considerado uno de los mejores jugadores de tenis de todos los tiempos." @malutella ¿Eres un hablante nativo?
You want to say, He is considered one of the best tennis players every, on clay. Yes? So, we already know how to say, "He is considered one of the best tennis players, ever."
ohhh so i write this then?? 6) El es considerado uno de los mejores jugadores de tennis de todos los tiempos sobre arcilla. ??? and did u say something about like speaking native?? haha :P
Yes. I asked if malutella was a native speaker. I had a question. But don't worry. If I were writing it, I'd specifically say "sobre la cancha de arcilla."
hahaa okay :) so 6 is this then? 6) El es considerado uno de los mejores jugadores de tennis de todos los tiempos sobre la cancha de arcilla. ??
Yeah.
And since we know how to say that, do you wanna try #7?
Siii hablante nativa
kk :) one sec... :/ lets see if i can do it haha :P and did u say,... i speak native?? lol idk :/
Yeah, haha I said I was a native speaker
oh oaky haha :)
Female, I'm sorry, I should have known. I didn't look closer at your pic.
Okay. @iheartfood You wanna try your hand at #7?
Don't worry ;)
(Remember that in Spanish, it's "tenis," with only one N.)
yeah haha sorry!! is it this?? 7) Rafael Nadal es uno de los mejores atletas de Espana. idk is that even close??
Yeah. You can say that. That's saying "he is one of the best athletes of Spain."
ohh cuz u wrote nativo (masculine) but she's a girl so nativa (feminine) is that right? haha :P and yeah one n :)
so thats right??
Yeah!
Mmm hm that's right. El hablante and la hablante.
but u know for #6 it would make more sense to write it like this El es considerado uno de los mejores jugadores de tenis sobre canchas de arcilla de todos los tiempos
Would it? Okay. That's great.
You know what, that makes sense, even in English.
wait so we changed 6 again?? to this?? 6) El es considerado uno de los mejores jugadores de tenis sobre canchas de arcilla de todos los tiempos. ?? is that better than what we had originally??
