OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Write two sets of parentheses. First factor 3a^2: (3a )(a ) because (3a)(a) = 3a^2 Now you need two numbers that multiply to 8: 1 and 8 or 2 and 4 Now you have 4 possibilities as to how to place the 1 and 8 or the 2 and 4 (3a + 1)(a + 8) or (3a + 8)(a + 1) or (3a + 2)(a + 4) or (3a + 4)(a + 2) The way you know the right one is to do foil to these 4 choices and see which one gives you the original middle term, 10a. In reality, all you need to do is the OI part of foil becasue that's where the middle term , 10a, comes from.
