Active space, another compositional technique, is when you have movement or when the subject is looking off into space. Centering these subjects or putting them on the Rule of Thirds grid line closest to the direction they are going in can create an off-balance photograph. Active space gives the object room to move in the photograph before the object would move out of the photograph. When you take a photograph of a person or animal looking to one side of the photograph, active space can be used to give the subject space to gaze and move the viewer’s eye in that direction.
