Why does it hurt when you burn, cut, or poke yourself?

We have specialized sensory nerve endings called "nociceptors." Whenever something happens to our body that damages our tissue, our nociceptors send nerve signals to our brain. And our brain interprets it as pain. The entire process is called "nociception."
