Find this number to the nearest tenth. What number is 33 1/3% of 30?

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

What do you think? Isn't 33 1/3% exactly 1/3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yea. It's 33.333333333333333333 and so on...

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Okay, 100% of 30 is 30 200% of 30 is 60 50% of 30 is 15 25% of 30 is 7.5 Now we have a rough estimate. What's the exact answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I dunno. I'm confused...That's not how my teacher taught us so...yeah.

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

I'm trying to coax you into showing some work. My little display was ONLY to give an estimate so that you don't wander off. Since 33 1/3% is between 50% and 25%, your answer should be between 7.5 and 15. If you get 48, that's no good. I always like to have an idea before I proceed. It helps avoid errors. If your teacher showed you a way to proceed, why don't you proceed that way? Let's see it.
