A gerund is a verb that is used as a noun. For example, "Her cooking is delicious."
Normally, cooking would be a verb (e.g.-"She is cooking dinner for her sisters.") but because it is "her cooking" it funtions as a noun. Another example would be "Running is my hobby."

For a gerund phrases, the sentence has to begin with the gerund ("Riding my bike to the store can be great excercise") and includes other modifiers and objects ("can be great excercise")
