PLZ HELP Do you think that policy of isolationism is possible in our world today? Explain.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sure. The Swiss do pretty well. But they are wealthy, smart, geographically isolated, have nothing anybody else really wants, and heavily armed (every Swiss male adult is required to keep a weapon and ammunition in his house). On the other hand, the Swiss, along with much of the Western world, depend on the American Navy keeping the seas safe for international trade. What would happen if nobody took on that job is unclear. And certainly the absence of international trade would be disastrous for any modern economy.

so you do think that the policy is possible in our world today because of The Swiss

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, it's possible, so long as the Americans keep the sea lanes free and generally discourage massive wars of aggression, the so-called Pax Americana. But that means it's possible only if you're not the United States. Is it possible for the United States itself? I don't know. I doubt it.
