how do i verify cos^2x-1/cos^2x-cosx = secx +1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you put some parenthesis in please to clarify the problem? :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sure (cos^2x) - 1 ------------ = sec x +1 (cos^2 x)-cos x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok the numerator breaks down into (cosx-1)(cosx+1) --------------- the denominator breaks down into cosx(cosx-1) so you cancel and you have (cosx+1)/cosx -or- cosx + 1 ---- ---- cosx cosx aka 1+ secx

OpenStudy (kainui):

x^2-1 factors out to be (x+1)(x-1) and x^2-x can factor out an x and become x(x-1). Here we see (x-1) factors out leaving you with x+1/x which is the same as 1+1/x Also, I substituted in cosx=x

OpenStudy (kainui):

Check for yourself that (cosx+1)(cosx-1) by using FOIL that it equals cos^2x-1.
