iit  was the first time in history that one major faction in a democracy replaced another in power without violence. The federalists were voted out, but Frderalists who had a right to remain in in office were left alone. Instead of the government launching measures of retribution, the new government under Thomas Jefferson actually lived by the adage "that government is best which governs least.." Hope that helps
