you distribute the 7 to the 6 and -2a making it 42-14a. then you do the same on the other side: distribute the 5 to the -3a and the 1 making it -15a+5. to solve for a, move -15a to the other side by adding it to -14a, so now you have 42+a=5. subtract 42 from 5 and you get a= -37
