divide both sides by 10 to get x^2 = 49

Dividing a number that ends in zero by 10 is easy, just drop the last zero. So 490 divided by 10 is 49. Now we have "x squared = 49" So list your perfect squares... 1 squared = 1 2 squared = 4 3 squared = 9 4 squared = 16 etc... You'll soon get to 49. But remember that (-3)*(-3) also equals nine... so you have TWO answers (one positive and one negative).
