Can you guys help me solve this problem : To rent a movie, Movie Madness charges $2.50 for the first day and an additional charge for every day after. One customer was charged $4.30 for four days. What would the customer be charged for renting a movie for an entire week?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

$2.50 is a fixed number giving you your b in the mx+b=y equation. From there we know a y value after 4 days is $4.30. So this is what we have so far.. 4.30=z(4)+2.50 Do you want me to take it farther?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

z is the slope we do not know

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes you can. ^^

So we have 1.80 in fines for 4 days divide the two we get .45/day. Now we have our slope. Here is the equation \[y=.45x+2.50\]

After one week so we will plug in 7 for x giving us \[y=.45(7)+2.50\] Calculate it out and you obtain the result of $5.65 Hope this helps

THANK YOU! And the slope, in this case would be the number of days right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, we determined the slope to be .45 by the information that was originally given. Go up 3 slides and the equation looks like this \[4.30=(z)(4)+2.50\] z is the slope we do not know and 4 is the x that is given. We determine the slope to be .45 because y is given (4.30) and x is given 4 days late fees. Does this make more sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

YES! Thank you! Very helpful.

To input x at 45 days say we would now just input that into x and follow the equation. Your welcome anytime!
