how can we apply newton's three laws of motion to everyday situations?
We can start with tossing keys to a nearby friend to warm up your car, or tossing your jacket on the rack, or kicking off your shoes, or walking or drinking water. It follows us everywhere, from basic and unnoticed to complex and tricky.
take a look at tossing keys. starting with the first law. First law: If an object experiences no net force, then its velocity is constant: the object is either at rest (if its velocity is zero), or it moves in a straight line with constant speed (if its velocity is nonzero) Since there is a force pulling it down it resides pushing against your hand, then you toss it putting motion into it by moving your hand. it is not at rest for any period of time. Second law: The acceleration a of a body is parallel and directly proportional to the net force F acting on the body, is in the direction of the net force, and is inversely proportional to the mass m of the body, i.e., F = ma. upon tossing the keys this goes into action and upon the catching by the friend. the force of your arm tossing it upwards at roughly a 20 to 60 degree angle provides the force in that direction, then the secondary force of gravity pulls it down bending the arc towards the earth and sending the keys towards the friends hands better. and lastly the third law. Third law: When a first body exerts a force F1 on a second body, the second body simultaneously exerts a force F2 = −F1 on the first body. This means that F1 and F2 are equal in magnitude and opposite in direction. this is when catching comes in. Your friend catches the keys and oh no, he cut his finger on them! the cut happened from the exerted force of the keys on his finger, and when he pushed back it forced a cut into his hand. and thus he has a cut and perhaps a better understanding of newtons three laws.
if that doesn't answer your question (be it for an open ended/short reply, or a simple class question for the weekend) then I don't know what will.
