What reacts with iron that hardens it?? Sorry this sounds confusing....

It depends on which of the other properties of iron you want to preserve. For example, if you're still interested in having a metal -- something with good tensile strength, and conductive -- then you can alloy the iron with some other transition metals (chromium and vanadium are popular), to create a mixture of metals stronger than iron.
