What condition causes an oblique asymptote? Give an example of a function that would have an oblique asymptote.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

If you have a rational function (a fraction of two polynomials) where the degree of the numerator is larger than the degree of the denominator, then you will have a graph with an oblique asymptote.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

for example, the function \[\Large f(x) = \frac{2x^2 + 3x + 5}{x-7}\] has an oblique asymptote because the degree of the numerator (2) is larger than the degree of the denominator (1)
