Check Answer for a percent question?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A store is offering a 25% discount on all items. Also, employees get a 10% employee discount. If you are an employee, which discount would you want to be applied first to save the most money?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think you discount it with the 10% first.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

both lead to the same final price here's why let x = original price Lets say you do the 25% discount first then the 10% discount apply the first discount x - 0.25x = 0.75x Then apply the second discount 0.75x - 0.10*0.75x = 0.675*x So in the end, you're paying 67.5% of the original price and you get an overall discount of 100 - 67.5 = 32.5% off ---------------------------------------------------------------- Now let's say you do the 10% discount first then the 25% discount apply the first discount x - 0.10x = 0.90x then apply the second discount 0.90x - 0.25*0.90x = 0.675*x and you get the same final price

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

So either way, you're getting the same discount (no matter which one you do first) The two discounts basically combine to 32.5% discount in the end.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ohh. I kinda figured that in the begining but then I thought I was underthinking it lol. Can you help me with one other thing?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

try it with prices of $100, $1000 and $10,000 and you'll see that the final prices will be the same (with either discount)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

k thnx. I also needed help with another problem but its pretty different from this one. (Maybe more like a far cry from this one lol)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

ok go for it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How would I solve something like this? f(x)= -5x + 3 g(x) = 6x - 2. Find f • g and its domain.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

f times g ? or f circle g?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

f times g. (it's a small filled in circle so I know it's multiplication)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so you need to expand (-5x+3)*(6x-2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

what do you get when you do this

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I do that with FOIL right?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

k I get –30x2 + 28x – 6 as my final answer

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you got it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Awesome! :D Thnx so much for your help then!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
