Confirm my answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Alyssa gave the following explanation for factoring the trinomial x2 - 3x - 4: "I need to find factors of -4 that add to -3. 4 and -1 multiplies to -4 and adds to -3 so my factors are (x + 4)(x - 1)." Part 1: Are Alyssa's factors correct? If not, explain where she made her mistake Part 2: What could Alyssa have done to check the accuracy of her factors before submitting her Module 3 test?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I say that she is correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or is it that she is wrong becuause the mistake is that 4 and -1 do not add to -3, they add to 3??

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

She said she needs factors of -4 that add to -3, but she picked factors that add to 3, not -3.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

You got it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

To check her accuracy, she can multiply her factors and she if she ends up with the starting equation?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

To check the factors she can multiply them and make sure they multiply to -4 and add them and make sure they add to -3.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i mean and check if she ends up with the equation she started off with

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

She doesn't need to FOIL the factors x +4 and x - 1. All she needs to do is what I wrote just above.

thankyou!!
