Consider the right triangle given below. The length of side b to two decimal places is ____ pic attached

OpenStudy (anonymous):

First, get angle A. All the inner angles of a triangle add up to 180, you know two of them, therefore: A=180-90-65 Now use the cosine function cos(A)=b/25 You have A, solve for b and you're done.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont get the cos a=b/25

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

well b is opposite the reference angle of 65 and a is adjacent the reference angle of 65. the hypotenuse is given... you need to decide if its sin = opp/hyp or cos = adj/hyp thats needed.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cos?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

to use cos you would need to find the angle A.... why do extra work... you will get the same answer... but use what you have

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so sin but i still don t understand how to solve it

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

ok so the hypotenuse is 25 , the opposite side is b and the reference angle is 65 sin (65) = b/25 just solve for b

OpenStudy (anonymous):

22.66

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

thats correct...
