\[5\frac{ 4 }{ 8 }-2\frac{ 6 }{ 8 }\]

OpenStudy (phoenixfire):

I'm guessing they're whole numbers. 5 and 4 8ths minus 2 and 6 8ths?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (phoenixfire):

There's a couple of ways to do this. The way I would do it is to change the whole numbers into the fraction. \[5={40 \over 8}\]\[2={16 \over 8}\] So then it becomes \[{44\over 8} - {22 \over 8}={{44-22}\over 8}={22\over 8}\] Then you can change that back to whole numbers. \[{22\over 8}=2{6\over 8}\] OR \[5-2=3\]\[{4\over 8}-{6\over 8}=-{2\over 8}\]\[3-{2 \over 8}=2{6\over 8}\]

thanks!
