18 -5x = -3( x - 2)

OpenStudy (lasttccasey):

18 - 5x = -3x + 6 18 - 6 = -3x + 5x 12 = 2x 6 = x

OpenStudy (lasttccasey):

Would you like a more in-depth explanation?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

@lasttccasey is correct, but here it is with the steps explained: Distribute the -3 on right side: 18 - 5x = -3x + 6 Add 3x to both sides and subtract 18 from both sides: 18 - 5x + 3x - 18 = -3x + 6 + 3x - 18 Combine like terms: -2x = -12 Divide both sides by -2 x = 6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is the 5x negative?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

The original problem did have - 5x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If i add +3 to both sides to get rid of 3x does -5x become -8x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got it! LOL

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

The left side had -5x. We added 3x to both sides to get rid of -3x on the right side. On the right side you end up with -3x + 3x = 0. On the left side, we already had -5x, so when you add 3x to it, you get -5x + 3x = -2x

nvm i forgot that -5 + 3 = -2 , -12/-2 = +6 xD

answer is 6
